Chapter Four

March 17th, 2005

Michael Matthews ran a hand through his graying hair, waiting as calmly as he could for the barrister to finish his spiel. Six years. Six years it had taken him to pull this off. Now the minutes ticked by like hours while he waited. He was a patient man, but not that patient. St. Patrick’s Day was fast slipping away.

He came back to Glencolmcille and Faerie Hill every year now on St. Patrick’s Day, the one day a year she could come to him. It wasn’t enough. Nowhere near enough, though it was more than the boy from the wrong side of the tracks had any right to expect. But he’d grown bolder. Learned to expect more. Every year he’d searched frantically for some clue, some hint of her name.

Nothing.

But now it would be different. Now he was here to stay.

As of today he owned Faerie Hill.

Mich smiled as he thought back on the meeting he’d had the first of the month -- his last official act as acquisitions manager for Fulson Microbreweries. He’d turned over his keys and copies of all his files and reports to Fulson himself.

Fulson -- the son, not the man he’d worked with for more than three decades -- stared at the paperwork in bafflement. “What’s this all about?”

“Simple. I quit.”

“You can’t quit.”

“I just did.”

“But -- but -- you can’t just walk away from here, Matthews. You’ve never worked anywhere else. You know you can’t do this job for anyone else, either. You signed a non-compete clause with us. You’re not a young man anymore, Matthews. You’re forty-eight years old. Who’s going to hire you?”

“I know how old I am. I got to be this old working for this company. I know my way around, and I know what I’ve signed. I have every right to sell my stock in the company. It’s my money I’m taking back. Call it an early retirement if you will. Besides, with you as the CEO, this company won’t be here a year from now. Your father was a good man. I miss him. Goodbye, Fulson.”

And just like that he’d walked out the door.

It felt damn good, looking back. Felt good knowing the investments he’d made had paid off, and he could do any foolish thing he wanted to.

Including buying a house on a hill in Ireland, overlooking the ocean. Including spending the rest of his days walking the woods, looking for Pixies and Faerie dust if that was what he wanted.

And he did.

He was a careful, planning sort of man, was Michael Matthews. He’d had years to think about this. Yes, to the rest of the world it might look foolish, but if he never tried, he’d never know what he might have missed. Even if they were to have just one day a year together from now until the end of his time, it was one day he wouldn’t spend without her.

“Congratulations, Mr. Matthews. Your deed will arrive by post in a few weeks. You are now the owner of the parcel of land, with cottage, known as Faerie Hill in Glencolmcille.
